Matt Tompkins is a successful podcaster and co-owner of Two Brothers Creative, a content marketing company. Tompkins has a robust past in radio and recently launched his own company in 2020. He had humble beginnings when he started at MavRadio 20 years ago during his time as an undergraduate student at the University of Nebraska at Omaha. Soon after graduation he truly blossomed into radio work where he not only did work on the air, but also off the air. At the end of his radio career, Matt had worked at a total of six other radio stations including iHeartRadio, Sirius XM, 11/10 AM, Sweet 98.5, and 96.1.
During Matt's time working at various radio stations, he continuously reached out to those in need. In particular, Matt and a fellow colleague saw a struggling saleswoman and made sure to help her complete her work. Little did he know that his good deeds helping this woman would later put him up for a major promotion as a head producer. This type of marketing is referred to as referral marketing, or in lament's terms, word of mouth. Matt owes most of his successes in his life to referral marketing. He wholeheartedly believes that human connections and good deeds are what truly will bring people success in our world and societies that have been founded on human nature since human evolution.
After the promotion aided Matt's connections and finances, he built a modest studio in his own house and founded a TV show called Omaha Live with his brother. Omaha Live was filmed in the meeting hall of the church his father preached and was modeled after skills similar to Saturday Night Live. Matt and his brother found incredible success with just a simple set-up and a camera gaining thousands of views a week on YouTube. This truly inspired them to want more.
Matt officially left radio work in 2020, when him and his brother founded Two Brothers Creative. They now specializes in creating video podcasts with content marketing for businesses and individuals. Matt firmly believes that marketing is so much more than just advertising and making a quick lump of money. He believes that marketing is something that happens everyday even in our informal relationships. We are marketing ourselves by always putting our best foot forward to make friends, gain social or occupational connections, or even continuing to properly represent ourselves as who we want to be to our spouses and children.
Matt believes that the science has repeatedly told us humans do not make decisions based solely on fact; rather, as a collective human race, we base our decision making on persuasion, connections, and basic human behaviors. Human nature has been hardwired to desire connection, so a key part of being a successful marketer is understanding human emotion, our own emotions, and how that affects actions and decisions. This type of referral marketing and capitalizing in investments is what has made Two Brothers Creative. They have not spent money on advertising and instead of invested in relationships and word of mouth.
The thought that one should take with them based on Matt's success is his belief that we need to genuinely invest in people. Even if we do not like the work or the person for a myriad of reasons, we can always find some small thing, some small version that we can like and can give back to that person. We should always put ourselves out there and make sure to show up, write those handwritten messages, and spread kindness. In the end, be true to ourselves and be kind to the world.
